1. Research has shown that outdoor adventure programs such as City Kids have substantial positive effects on children including measurable improvements in independence, self-efficacy, confidence and problem solving.
2. According to the National Center for Children in Poverty, child poverty is defined as children who live in families with incomes below the federal poverty level (FPL). The annual FPL is $16,090 for a family of three and $19,350 for a family of four. The District has the highest percentage of children (30%) living in poverty. Even more alarming is the fact that nineteen percent of the District's children are living in extreme poverty, income below 50% of poverty level.
3. We seek out responsible, respectful and enthusiastic children in need of financial assistance who exhibit unrealized potential. Annually, 65 children are selected from among thousands of needy youth living in the District of Columbia. We work closely with parents and community partners to insure our program is meeting the needs of City Kids participants and are not duplicating the efforts of other agencies.
4. Parents and guardians are amazed by the changes they have seen in their children as a direct outcome of our programs at camp and throughout the year. When asked about their child’s personal growth, 85% felt that their child acquired new skills, knowledge and life lessons in a positive environment.
5. All City Kids students recently surveyed experienced an improved view of their personal future.
6. All City Kids students recently surveyed expressed a greater degree of friendship skills, family citizenship, teamwork, independence, responsibility and confidence after just three weeks of summer camp.
7. Last summer, 92% of students reported gains in outdoor skills and knowledge.
8. Students in our Job Training Program have a high school graduation rate of 89% compared with the District of Columbia’s rate of less than 60%. Seventy-two percent of our JTP alumni are attending or have graduated from college.
9. The Catalogue of Philanthropy recognized City Kids for excellence, innovation and cost-effectiveness.
10. We take every opportunity to keep our administrative costs low. In fact, more than 90% of each dollar goes directly to children's programs!

Are you interested in becoming directly involved with City Kids Camp? Volunteers who work directly with campers go through a similar “hiring” process as employees. Because we are always concerned about the welfare of the children in our program, all individuals must be carefully screened. Therefore, we seek volunteers who are interested in extended commitments (e.g. a camp session, a summer, spring programs). Visit our Staff page for more information regarding our needs and staff qualifications and then contact Molly Warga, Program Coordinator, at 202-355-3920 or molly@citykidscamp.org
Perhaps you would like to help behind the scenes. If you are interested in helping with fundraising or a camp work project, on or off-site, please contact Molly Warga at 202-355-3920, at or molly@citykidscamp.org
